The idea of women as unstable, made up of weaker stuff, was a very effective way to oppress women. Professor king told me about an example from the sixteenth century. A young woman named anna isn't well, and her father is concerned. Anna's dad reaches out to a doctor help, and they begin a correspondence. It's because she's still a virgin, her blood has got stuck in her body, and it can't go out because she's not open at the bottom. This disease, its what's called the virgin's disease, because she's a virgin.
