I trust an accountant not because he knows the tax laws better than i do, but ultimately because there are things an accountant would never do and would never sign his name to. When that is no longer available to us as a source of trust, this transformation of institutions becomes a source of growing mistrust. Sum whereas every voice in american life told everybody in the first half of the twentieth century to become more like everyone else, since the 19 sixties, every voice in America is told every American be yourself. Be yourself is a liberating thing, but it does tend to break down mutual responsibility. This is why people in power tend to see institutions as platforms for themselves.
