When I first got into journalism, because I was like living in a tent in the Arctic training to be a scientist when I started recruiting a writer. One of my early jobs was writing about higher education policy. And I would sit in on hearings in Congress of the Science and Space Subcommittee in the Senate. Kay Bailey Hutchinson often start meetings by taking this like a stack of research proposals and saying if it didn't directly say we're going to discover some commercial technology, then she would say, how is this going to help us get ahead of China and India? "I think that really defies everything we've learned about how innovation often works," he says.
