The Evolution of Fish Oil

80 or 90% of all fish oil that comes out of the ocean year on year is now going into aquaculture. Transgenic plants can produce an alternative source of fish oils potentially free from contaminations with heavy metals, says Jonathan Napier. A separate team at Sterling University is currently undertaking feeding trials on salmon to assess the quality of the oil and the fish. And what about its potential use in human nutrition? "I don't see any reason why the oils that we're producing in our greenhouse couldn't be used for human nutrition"
