The History of Life on Earth

Most of the history of life on Earth is a history of single-celled microorganisms. This invaded land well before vertebrate organisms. They invaded land about 400 million years ago, maybe even a little bit more. And what is it that made water so much more hospitable to animals than land? Water is where the action was in terms of nutrients.
