For its entire history, rome had always projected outward. In two 60 a d this legitimacy was finally shattered by simultaneous attacks on all the major frontiers. Gallic empire may have seceded from the union, as it were, but it did not reject the values, forms or ideals that that union had been based upon. The people abandoned the central government and the roman empire broke apart.
