The Greatest Mistake of Louis the 14th

Louis the fourteenth set up a trap for any future king who proved to be weak willed, or whose presence on the throne created a power vacuum. Had louis placed himself at the head of a social revolution and reduced the nobles to a condition similar to that enjoyed by the english peerage, the monarchy would probably have been saved. The establishment of a bureaucracy dependent on an absolutism did wonders for france in the seventeenth century. It is much to be regretted that louis successos did not introduce the s required by the existence of such new conditions and ideas in the eighteenth century.
