The Parallel Organizations of the US Military
The way the US military has been structured since the 1970s is there are two parallel organizations. There are combined commands, which are responsible for actually planning and carrying out military operations. The same entities can actually part of both. When I was an Air Force officer, I was working for US Strategic Command - they were the combatant commander for space.
