The Importance of Silence in Buddhism

The importance of silence in Buddhist meditation is that we distinguish between things, right? And so when speech falls away, what opens up the possibility of recognizing things as interdependent. John Cage's musical composition, 433, was a highly controversial piece because it consists of silence. If you look at the musical sheet of the composition itself, it's literally empty. It's just musical paper without notation.
