The Binding Factor in South Asia
In the very recent past, there was this kind of imperial rule across the region. And that is in fact, also what gave us the identity of the subcontinent and holds us together. When I used to serve in Sri Lanka, you heard the muffled footsteps of India beating in the blood of everything you saw. There were certainly those muffled footsteps, but they had created something quite unique out of it. It's not that we can superimpose our identity on them. And we must respect, you know, what they have carved out for themselves and what they have created. That's what makes our region so fascinating.
