"I was a recruiter's dream. I didn't know anything about getting rank and all that," he says. "They were calling me pops like I was an old man, right? You're my boy, Glies." He went to basic training as a private E1 even with all his experience. After two years in the U.S., you have eight years to become a citizen or you have to get out of the army - so it took time.
