My great grandfather, silas, was born a number of years after the end of slavery. He served in world war one along with 350 thousand other black american soldiers and segregated units. When he came back to the united states at the end of the war, there was a very anti black sentiment. So he really had no wealth. He became a share cropper. My father, another soldier, bought his first home in his early fifties. But it took four generations for our family to move into home ownership and begin to build ownership in equity in a home.
