Gambling and the Chinese
In 19 26, colonial secretary wyson called for extreme measures to keep the chinese in line. The newspapers regularly disparaged the chinese jamaicas and acted as a platform for local people to vent their concerns. By 19 forty three, the census showed the ethnic chinese population had grown to 12 thousand 394 of which 40% were classified as chinese colored. A public school was established, which led many locals to pour scorn on the chinese for not assimilating and clinging to their traditions.
