The History of the Sophists
Athens was particularly accommodating to non-Atheanian medics, in terms of providing for freedom of speech. The training that their students would undergo was intended to make them successful statesmen. New rhetorical techniques were developed and taught over the 5th century BC. In this endeavor, their students were taught how to use words more so to win an argument or persuade others rather than how to reach some sort of objective truth.
