I was sort of humbled by HIV. I went into infectious disease because to me it seemed like the one specialty that was all about cure. You could make an astute diagnosis on someone coming back from the Congo with a strange hemorrhagic fever and they would rise like Lazarus. And you know, overnight we became the people caring for mostly young folks with a fatal illness. So my thesis is that whenever we have any kind of injury, break your finger at one level it's like, oh God, it's a fracture of the mid-fallings of my finger,. But at another level it's why me, why now? Why did this have to happen?
