Introduction
Pippin by nickname, pip, by abbreviation, poor pip. He was at bottom very bright, with a pleasant, genial, jolly brightness. Pip loved life and all life's peaceable securities. The panic stricken business in which he had somehow unaccountably become entrapped had most sadly blurred his brightness. What was thus temporarily subdued in him, in the end was destined to be luridly illumed by strange wildfires that showed him off to ten times the natural lustre. It came to pass that in the ambergriss affair, stubbs, after oarsmen, chanced so to sprain his hand as for a time to become quite maimed
