When were the last workhouses? When did they cease to exan? There isn't a precise date. In 19 30, local councils took over the running of the workhousesye. Between 19 30 and 19 38, most of them carried on as public assistance institutions. It sall came into becoming more like nursing home. Most forber workhouses either became n h s institutions, hospitals, gereatric hospitals or retained by local councils as old people's homes. The workhouse was the welfare system of its day.
