The US Economy Is in a Recession

The consensus, as we mentioned last week, is that we're going into a recession. Yet if you look at the numbers for eight or nine months already, the cyclical elements of the economy have already been depressed. The odd man out here is that employment has not really responded. And there is sort of a chicken and egg thing here because the biggest driver of consumer spending is employment and earnings.
