Dickens's genius at combining photographic realism with great sweeps of imagination means that he has an unusual power to sum up the nature of a place or an institution. He was some one who not only felt very passionately about social injustice, but actually did a great deal in practical terms, to rove things. The attraction of dickens's stories can be seen by the vast quantity of film and stage adaptations that have been made of them. Like shakespeare, he invented words which have gone into the language.
