Lincoln's first words in the gettysburg address, therefore, hearken back to that document. Conceived is such a perfect word. We use it in the sense of initiating, like the moment life begins. And here this nation was, says l Lincoln, was conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. That's the america that was imagined at the very beginning,. dedicated to the propositions, not the reality.
