How to Write a Novel
I've written now 13 novels, 12 of them published. I have always been struck by the way in which the characters themselves begin to take over. When you start a book, you don't really understand the character very well. But as the character emerges, the character begins to tell you what they're going to do next. One is three years ago, one is yesterday,. that kind of come together in the telling of the story and then the story finally forms a tight core. You understand what's motivating the characters and then moves forward in a linear way.
