The Second Type of Imitation Is Bad News for the Novelty Industry
There are two types of imitation in the novelty toy industry. The first is when other companies rip off your idea and make money from it. The second kind is when they're cheap knockoffs that even ruin the joke. Kirk Demaris, who studied how novelty items are sold, says this phenomenon has actually hurt novelty companies across the country. After the 80s, even standalone novelty shops started closing down and now they're almost non-existent.
