Is There a Germane Load?
Cognitive load theory separates out three different types of demands that learning puts on our limited working memory capacity. Theory suggests for some skills there may be a necessary, effortful form of learning required cognitive load. The second is extraneous this is unnecessary cognitive load that distracts from learning the pattern. Third is germain loat this is load that's not necessary for learning the pattern, but which improves learning outcomes. Some forms of germaine load include self explanation and retrieval practice.
