Elroy Kent was found guilty of carving initials in a barn and sentenced to death. The Vermont State Supreme Court denied his appeal on the grounds that handwriting samples were not enough evidence against him. His execution date was set for January 5, 1912 but it was postponed until after Christmas because legislature didn't complete their end of your business before they went out for recess.
