Chikovsky's Allegro Con Anima

The Chikovsky writes that the music should be played at 104 to the dotted quarter note, which is this tempo. He also writes Allegro con anima, meaning fast and with animation or excitement. I've always vastly preferred performances where the conductor tries to get as close to the metronome marking as possible. This first theme sounds much more nervous and agitated than resigned and sad.
