The Six-Part Fugue
The six part fugue has been called the most important composition in the history of the piano by Charles Rosen. The origins of the piece are a blast from the past, when Frederick the Great met with Bach to show him his new Forte Piano. He gave Bach a complex theme and told him to improvise a three-voice fugue on the theme. Two months later he released this masterpiece of counterpoint.
