Birds Are Intermediaries

The impulse to fly comes from birds, an impulse that has completely reshaped the world and our place in it. Birds traverse the intermediary layer between our skulls and the impersonal expanse of the sky. The human neural cortex grew and developed in a world teeming with birds. Many religious ideas so embedded in Western minds can be traced back to the imprint in our bodies and minds left by birds.
