Writing in the Shadow of a Great Writer
I remember someone in school when I told them about my grandfather, they were like, oh, the Elvis of the Holocaust, and that kind of made me laugh. And it is tricky to write in the shadow of someone who's such an important writer. He was one of my earliest readers, my parents were for first but I did send him little stories and things like that. But he said, you know you're a writer and that gave me confidence so I think it was important to be in a in a certain kind of dialogue with him through writing. So that's part of why I wrote the story.
