The Importance of Opium in the Chinese Trade
Lin Zeshu shut down all British trade of every kind for six weeks. He didn't listen to advice from people who might have helped him, says historian. The Chinese were aware that shutting down trade could provoke a violent response. In 1834 there was an incident where gunships were called in because trade was shut down.
