Bike lanes in London carried 46% of the human traffic, but using only 30% of the space. It's a very inefficient means of moving people around. But it does require taking space from motorists. And that will always result in a perception that they're under attack or being disadvantaged. So if it encourages more people out of their cars and onto their bikes, it could actually also have a beneficial impact on traffic players on roads.
