I wanted to do a non-fiction graphic novel and I had the struggle early on with the act of cartooning. When I was working on that book I was struggling through all of that you know and part of the way I did that was by just footnoting the crap out of that book so there are some people who won't be surprised that there are historical graphic novels like dragon hoops but back when you first published American born Chinese it still felt unusual. There's this tension I think between western faith and china at the turn of the 20th century, which is where your story takes place.
