The First Witness of Man's Self-Understanding
For John Paul, chapter two of Genesis constitutes in some way the oldest record of man's self-understanding. And together with chapter three, is the first witness of human consciousness. The primal experience of man manifested in those two chapters in Genesis is what Saint John Paul II refers to as a regional solitude. He goes on to conclude therefore, that this sort of search of our objective identity is part of all of our lives.
