There's a difference between novelty and surprise. If you give me a toy that surprises me for a bit, it'd be great. I can imagine companies selling updates to their companion robots that just basically generate negative surprise just to just spice things up a bit. As you said, love is a complicated thing. Oh, beauty. A survey published in nature showing that scientists find complexity more attractive than simplicity. And then physicists obviously love simplicity about all else.
