The Power of the Closed Book

The most supernaturally powerful book in the rabbinic imaginary was an unreadable one. A tour scroll is most powerful when it can be imagined to contain everything, but not distracting its audience by leaking little snippets of ecclesiastes all over their consciousness. So you don't necessarily want a chorus scroll going off script and pronouncing an outlandish line from Josea about, you know, a husband beating his wife. You want it closed up and silent so that it acts as a conduit of God's power without making its own particularities too evident.
