The cold is a powerful stimulus and kids are at a smaller bodied people are at a greater risk of hypothermia so a good reason to approach it with caution. I used to do some Pacific Ocean swims in the morning without wetsuits and I adapted to it pretty quickly but these are fairly long swims. We brought an excellent swimmer with us that was interning with me for a while who became hypothermic his teeth turned yellow he was got slurring his words he wasn't making sense you know we got him on the shore and he was kind of drooling and a little semi euphoric and then kind of you know it was hypothermia is no joke
