When he was in these other countries, did they view him as an intellectual comrade? I think based on some of the writing in the anthology a little bit of both. And as time has gone on, people have adapted to use to their own local struggles and they're just dead in him. A comrade, a fellow traveler. I realized this is all loaded Cold War language but if we can imagine using those terms uncoupled from their origin then it's not so bad.
