Structuralism is the big daddy of literary theory. It was founded by Ferdinand Sessosur, a Swiss linguist. He posited that best way to understand a language is not necessarily in the day-to-day meaning of words but in the broader structures that lie behind them. Northrop Fry and Chomsky came from structuralism.
