Freud's Repetition Compulsion
If you're with a substance abuse person, it's likely that you've lived with it. You have adaptive skills around it and it is a comfort to you. Freud basically referred to this as repetition compulsion. Compulsion is an unconscious, automatically psychological defense mechanism. The history we try to rewrite is typically the troubled or unsatisfactory relationship with our parents particularly but not always and most of the time the opposite sex parents.
