The more skilled a rider is, the less movement they're going to create. Don't get in your head that if it still feels hard, you're not doing it correctly. You'll get better at it, but it will always be uncomfortable. The key is that you can be confident that that's ok,. Your absolute power, or your ability to do that relative to your ride mates, will increase and become better. Switchbacks are where most elevation gain happens on mountain bike trails. Set yourself up wide for them; this allows you to carry momentum through switchbacks. It really helps with criterium rides when everyone slows down during turns.
