The Federal Reserve Loans Money to the Government
Back in 2001, 42% of the federal debt was owned by the Social Security Trust Fund. Now let me show you what it looks like today. Notice that we can't pinpoint the amount. There is a 200 trillion dollar variance in the possibilities. But what I want to talk about here is just the official debt. So this is the 31 trillion dollars that the federal government has borrowed.
