In her first trial in 1990, she pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder. She claimed that she was driven over the edge by years of psychological, physical, and mental abuse at the hands of her ex-husband. The prosecution portrayed her as a woman who planned and schemed to murder her ex- husband. This trial resulted in a mistrial that jury could not agree on whether Betty's actions were premeditated or not.
