How Are You in the USA?

In the US, people will say, like, hi, how are you? Hi, how are they? And you don't even have to reply. I feel like in England, there tends to be more meaning behind it. In some ways, I kind of miss the British way where sometimes you have very friendly people,. Sometimes you have very grumpy people and you don't know what you're going to get. It's a mixed bag.
