Plato - Is Plato Really Liable to All These Claims?
Plato criticised greek theatre for giving its audiences license to express emotions in a way they wouldnor ly find shameful. He eliminates certain musical modes, rhythms and even instruments from the ideal city because they induce emotions that are corruptive fors iety. In dialogue after dialogue, plato imitates specific historical people by making them characters. Preserving these readers from the insidious influence of the poets is no longer an option - rather he must try to counteract that influence. And he is not above fighting fire with fire.
