In 1966, Nigeria's government was overthrown in a coup led by soldiers from the influential Ibo minority. A counter coup followed and soon Ibo people around Nigeria were facing attacks and persecution. In May 1967, Emika Ujukwu declared it to be an independent state called Biafra. 13-year-old Patricia Ingoze knew to keep quiet about her Ibo identity because careless talk kills.
