The Tree and the River Are the Same Shape
When people were making formal gardens, they made tulips form fors and clipping trees. And the garden was laid out in squares. This is a very curious thing, because we still tend to do that to some extent. When you fly across the united states from san francisco to new york, you encounter first a long stretch of mountain country where human beings must perforce accord with nature. But by and large, all our roads are curly because they have to go along mountain valleys. There are curly rivers and wonderful washes, which, interestingly enough, are in the form of trees. It's very, really fascinating.
