Sickle cell anemia affects about 100,000 people in the United States alone. Two experimental treatments essentially take stem cells from the patient and modify that HPV gene to create healthy red blood cells. In several patients, it worked. There is a lot more research to be done. But if researchers can overcome these obstacles, they'll have some of the largest data sets in the history of the world.
