The Great Persecution by Diocletian
When decius ascended the throne in two forty nine, he issued an edict demanding all citizens sacrifice on behalf of the emperor. Disobedience was considered treason and could be punished with death. Scholars disagree on the scope of dicia's decree. There's no doubt that christians were hort hit. The persecutions culminated in a grand finale known as the great persecution by diocletian. He had already warmed up by burning manichean spiritual leaders and their books. Now it was time for the christians to feel the heat.
