The Importance of Institutions in Addressing Political Violence
Nicole: What does it take then to have successful institutions in addressing the issue of political violence? I love how forcefully you made the point that it's not about culture. It's about the way the leaders adapt to trigger events and the extent of political exclusion that drives violence, she says. Nicole: In Ambon, my book basically, my book argues that political leaders in Ambon find that existing institutions, primarily elections, fail to accommodate their demands. And as a result, they turn to more informal means of political participation and to violence in order to articulate their demands for inclusion.
