Watsap's growth on mobile phones directly challenged facebook messenger, especially because watzap was taking off in parts of the world that messenger just wasn't. Zuckeberg needed it, or he might lose to it. So he made his move before whatshap was set to meet with google. Zuckerberg ed coomb over for dinner. The technology would any one except the sender and recipient of a message from being able to read it. Even watzap itself wouldn't be able to know the contents of the conversations flowing through its service.
