The Nihong Shoki, the Second of the Early History of Japan After the Kojiki, or Record of Ancient Things

The mandala was commissioned by prince shotoku's wife, tachi bana no o dasume. She believed him to be such a profound figure in helping to bring buddhism and popularize it in japan that he was destined for rebirth in a particularly elevated realm. The original version of the mondala survives only in fragments.
